“colic”

July 31, 2009 · 1 Comment

We went through a bout of “colic” persay. Colic is “fussy baby for no determinable reason” which is silly as babies don’t get that irritable unless there’s a reason. They’ve found in recent years that colic is almost always either a case of silent reflux, gas, or other digestive issues. Poor thing has tummy pains and/or heart burn from hell. We went through it for about three days. Ariana was showing classic signs of silent reflux, like Elaine, including milk out the nose. It wasn’t near as often and generally she just showed signs of pain. So far none of the choking, but I was going to have her tested with how this week was going. Compared to Elaine though Ariana’s fussiness is way worse. Then Wednesday hit and she was so bad she’d nap maybe 40min at a time and only if you held her just so. Those times were few and far between while the rest of the day was a scream fest. She wanted me the whole time and pretty much either wanted walked or to nurse. I did notice she seemed gassy as there were I couple time I was sure she had a messy diaper, but didn’t. Seemed a new development and I thought maybe that was her issue. We got Myclon gas drops as I know many parents who swear by them. I never used them with the twins, but they are cheap, OTC, and harmless. If they didn’t work we were out nothing and after the beginning of the week, especially Wednesday, I was ready to try standing on my head if it would help. After 24 hours of using them, I have my baby back. Those little drops did the trick!

Two Weeks!

July 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I can’t believe she’s already two weeks old. Went to the pedi for her weight check and I totally messed up. Our appointment was at 9am, and I thought it was at 2pm. They didn’t call to confirm for whatever reason, and I blew it. So instead of seeing the doctor we usually see we saw an older Indian man, and I’m SO glad we did. He was way laid back, which is how I generally approach things. The newer doctors, not so much. Last week I was told if she’s not back at her birth weight by today I’d have to look into supplementing more as BFing alone wouldn’t be cutting it. She weighed in at 8lbs 9oz and a little more so just under 2oz shy of her birth weight. (She was pretty hungry when we arrived and had I been able to nurse her before instead of after, I’m confidant she’d have been her birth weight and even a bit more as she’ll drink 2-3 oz at a time according to LC weigh ins.) Last Wed she was 8lbs 5oz. This doctor wasn’t concerned with the numbers in the least. Or rather they weren’t the end all be all. He said he was more than satisfied with a 4oz gain in 5 days and wasn’t really concerned that she hadn’t hit her birth weight yet. Everything checked out well, see you in 2 weeks for her month check up.

Her belly button is just fine. I assumed as much, but the constant weeping and bleeding made me nervous. I’ve had it cauterized twice to no avail. Apparently this is very common. There are no signs of infection and he OK’d baths at this point too. Said not to be afraid to really wash it well with soap and water. \o/

Only bad news is that she has tort too. No where near as bad as her sister (Elaine went through surgery to help correct it), but it’s there. I noticed a tilt last week and told myself I was imagining things. Manipulated her neck over the weekend and was sure at that point I wasn’t. Had him look at it just to confirm. He suggested some repositioning (which is near impossible already as she can pick her head up and turn it to what side she wants) and at 6-8 weeks they’d make a call on if she would need PT. Going through all this with Elaine and starting PT at two weeks, we’ll be working with her off and on at home in hopes to avoid it all together.
