But people DID think this, thus the lawsuit and my LOL at them. Fun entertainment, sure. Educational? Perhaps, depends on the toy and how the parents use it. Making kids smarter just by existing? Nope~

I own a bunch of Baby Einstein videos, and so do some of the other moms I know. None of us ever thought that they "made the kid smarter", what we do think is that they are a cute way to keep the kid entertained while we tried to get something done. What's nice about the Baby Einstein vids was that they have a "repeat play" option, so you can ignore your child for an extended period of time! ;P

This article is good for the LOL. AFAIK, the research concerning attention span/early TV exposure is mixed and weak. Most of the concern is that TV will interfere with the amount of time the parent pays attention to the kid, or be a bad influence on them as some of the shows teach quite frankly bratty behavior. Both of these concerns can be mitigated by actually watching the shows with the kids.

Who does this? Plenty of people. I do, and I usually discuss what's going on and ask them questions. I watch my kids nearly 24/7, there has to be some kind of mind-numbing down time mixed in there or I'd go nuts. ;p

Really? People really thought that having their kids watch an educational program on TV was going to make them smarter? There just aren't any words...
