So Friday I go in for one of a bazillion (or it feels like it) NSTs. Baby is nonreactive. This is a normal thing as she rarely preforms well without prodding. It’s generally not a concern though because after prodding she wakes up and reacts within whatever the “normal” limits are for how old she is that week. I’ve been doing this at least twice a week since April so there isn’t much they can throw at me that worries me.
I know the baby’s baseline. Not that the nurses running the tests share all the specifics (they don’t have to share anything as they can make me wait to talk to my doc), but I can watch the read outs and am educated enough with questions I’ve had answered to get the gist. She’s generally 135-140 at rest and up in the 160’s when she’s “reacting.” Friday she was all over the map but high. started in the 160’s but kept jumping to the 180’s. This continues non stop for almost 20 minutes, then she just stops. Her heart rates stayed at 170 and didn’t change for the next hour an a half no matter what they did. Juice, ice water, me getting up and walking, them prodding the belly, bringing out the buzzer, nothing, zero reaction. So they take me off the monitors and let me know she failed but don’t explain details. They move on to the ultrasound part and as far as that’s concerned things are looking OK. Nothing constituting an emergency, but they make me stay put while they go consult with the on duty Dr. and then call my OB. I am told to come back for a repeat test first thing in the morning and if results are similar I’m told we’ll be having a baby. I also get my pick of times as “they don’t do NSTs on the weekend.”
I’ve delt with various results and unresponsiveness before. After the failed NST they do the ultrasound and then tell me everything is AOK as she scored a 10/10 on the biophsyical and to come back as planned in a few days. This is the first time I’ve been told everything is OK, when it’s obviously not. Freaked me out a little bit. Every part of instinct is telling me it’s too early, OMG if she has to come tomorrow will she be OK, will induction even work, OMG what if they have to do a c-section, etc. Besides, her crib is still in pieces in the green room and we haven’t dug out the baby baby clothes yet, nor do we have a name! So we inform people we had plans with on Saturday that we’ll probably not be able to keep said plans and otherwise try not to freak out overly much, but it’s hard.
Saturday morning comes, my mom is on standby just in case the test turns into OMG baby NOW, and off we go. The little stinker and I pass the tests with flying colors and without any kind of intervention. No ice, juice, prodding, buzzing… no nothing. PHEW! Talk about relif <3 Still, with things going as they are with me, and her being mostly unreactive unless she’s poked as of late, I wouldn’t be suprised if they want to deliver her soomer than later. I have my next NST on Tuesday morning along with my weekly OB appointment. We’ll see if induction is in the near future or not then. Here’s hoping they’ll let her stay another week at least.
